:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mike Robbins -- Samurai and scum on the high seas : I first read this book as a young man, and loved it. Coming back to it after nearly 40 years, I still do; but it also raises questions about Jack London and what was going on in his head when he wrote it. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from F. Steve Adam -- Avoid Buying This Poorly Manufactured Paperback : I have no issue with the novel. It's excellent, as are all of Jack London's works. What I do have a big problem with is the extremely CHEAP paperback it came in. The manufacturer used the cheapest, flimsiest material he could find. The insult to injury came when I looked at the printed text-- it's so small I need to use a magnifying glass to read it. No doubt by using TINY print the manufacturer could use fewer, smaller, cheaper pages of paper. What a joke, and a bad one at that, on me!!! Not worth the price of postage to send it back. AVOID buying this poorly manufactured paperback! ( Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2016 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Irwin Bryan -- A Strange Mutiny Indeed! : A Shanghaid crew of drunken landlubbers are trouble from day one. A second mate with a troubled past and a first mate that adored his victim. These are the ingredients that foment into violent mutiny. A surprising romance develops that runs counter to the other events of this story. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joseph Crane -- Another hit. : A great sea adventure story. The protagonist becomes more likeable as the story progresses. Plenty of bad guys to choose from. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- a Great Sea Story : I thought it a great sea story, trusting it was a realistic depiction of the early 1900's when sailing ships were still being used in the American merchant marine. What a rough life for seamen, especially for the sailors as opposed to the officers. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2015 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Planet G -- Don’t buy! : Something very wrong with the text - it’s as though someone has ( badly) translated a foreign edition into English. Obviously Amazon don’t bother with quality checks either and so don’t mind if customers are cheated ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 8, 2020 )

- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Vinicio Nincheri -- Non il miglior London : La solita maestria nella presentazione dei personaggi e degli ambienti e delle interazioni tra gli uni e gli altri, peccato che la storia proprio non decolli. ( Reviewed in Italy on October 2, 2014 )
( Reviewed in Italy on June 5, 2013 )

LibriVox recording of The Mutiny of the Elsinore, by Jack London. Read by Tom Crawford. This is the story of a voyage of a sailing ship from Baltimore to Seattle, east-to-west around Cape Horn in the winter. It is set in 1913 and the glory days of "wooden ships and iron men" are long over. This work was published before January 1, 1926, and is in the public domain worldwide because the author died at least 100 years ago. The mutiny of the elsinore by jack london. At nine o'clock the tug was to have taken me down the bay and put me on board the Elsinore, and with growing irritation I sat frozen inside my taxicab and waited. The Elsinore is a four-masted iron sailing vessel carrying a cargo of 5000 tons of coal. She has a "bughouse" crew of misfits and incompetents. This book was published in 1915 and some actions of some of the characters seem odd to us today. There is romance, but it is strangely platonic. When the Elsinore lay in Erie Basin , just arrived from California with a cargo of barley, I had crossed over from New York to inspect what was to be my home for many months. Long before the mutiny of the title, life on the Elsinore becomes a struggle of two worlds - the gracious, comfortable world of the officers and New Yorkers can see two moored at the South Street Seaport.
